seedbank and nurseries
Our seedbank and tree nurseries are the heartbeat of our restoration efforts.
In 2021, The Kilimanjaro Project received catalytic funding from Terraformation to build a state of the art seedbank that can store up to five million seeds.
We have two nurseries, one in Kilimanjaro Region (Weruweru) and one in Arusha Region (Usa River). Nested on the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru where we operate, the nurseries have a capacity of up to 100,000 trees per season per nursery.
There are two rainy seasons per year, April-June: long rains and October-December: short rains. Although the rains and these timelines have been less reliable the last few years.
We are collating data on the timeline for each species; understanding the time it seeds, the time and process it takes to prepare the seed, the time it takes to germinate the seed, and the time it takes to grow the seedling and hardening it before it is ready for planting. This process helps us plan ahead for projects.
